Count spoons or use a cup?
A US cup holds 16 tablespoons, and a 1/4 cup measure holds 4. Once a conversion goes past 4 tablespoons, a cup measure plus a few spoons is quicker than counting, and it is more accurate too, because every extra spoonful adds a little error.
For 100 g that means: heavy ingredients like honey (4.71 tbsp) and table salt (5.56 tbsp) are still easy to count in spoons. Sugar is exactly 8 tablespoons, which is 1/2 cup. Light ingredients such as flour (13.33 tbsp), rolled oats (17.78 tbsp) and cocoa (18.6 tbsp) are better measured with a cup.
The formula
Tablespoons = 100 ÷ grams per tablespoon. Grams per tablespoon is the ingredient’s weight per US cup divided by 16. Butter is 227 g per cup, so 14.19 g per tablespoon, and 100 ÷ 14.19 = 7.05 tablespoons.
Cups = 100 ÷ grams per cup. For butter that is 100 ÷ 227 = 0.44 cup. Multiply the cup figure by 16 and you get the tablespoon figure again.
Worked examples
A recipe lists 100 g each of butter, sugar and flour. Butter: 7.05 tablespoons, just under one US stick of 8. Sugar: 8 tablespoons, which is 1/2 cup. Flour: 13.33 tablespoons, measured as 3/4 cup + 1 tbsp + 1 tsp. The same 100 g gives three very different volumes.
100 g of honey for a granola. 100 ÷ 21.25 = 4.71 tablespoons. Measure 1/4 cup + 2 tsp. Oil the spoon or cup first so the honey slides out.
100 g of rolled oats. 100 ÷ 90 = 1.11 cups. Measure 1 cup + 1 tbsp + 2 1/4 tsp.
Per 100 grams on labels
Nutrition labels in Europe and many other countries give values per 100 g. The table above helps you picture that amount in the kitchen: 100 g of sugar is half a cup, 100 g of flour is a little over 3/4 cup and 100 g of peanut butter is a little over 6 tablespoons.
In US weight units, 100 g is 3.53 ounces. That is ounces of weight, not fluid ounces: 100 g of honey is 3.53 ounces on a scale but only about 2.35 fluid ounces in a measuring jug, because honey is heavier than water.
For any other weight, change the amount in the converter. It accepts grams or ounces, and switches direction to give grams from tablespoons, teaspoons or cups.
