Plan your recipe and purchases

The starting flour, sugar and egg prices are illustrative examples. Replace them with your own package prices.

Enter quantities for one batch below, then choose 1 to 1,000 whole batches. Pantry stock is counted once across the full plan.

Use one currency throughout. Changing the label doesn’t convert prices.

Enter decimal values up to 1,000,000 with at most six decimal places. Package quantity and servings must be above zero.

Package quantity, amount used per batch and pantry stock use the same unit in each row. Enter all three in that unit.

For the full-package estimate, subtract entered pantry stock once across the complete batch plan. Starting stock defaults to zero. Combine repeated uses of the same purchased product into one row so its packages are not counted twice. Pantry stock and leftovers are valued at the entered package unit price, not what you originally paid.

№02 · Follow the money

What goes into the recipe

A package has a price and a quantity. Divide price by quantity to get the price per unit, then multiply by the amount you use.

NIST defines unit pricing as cost per unit of measure. The worksheet applies that definition to the package prices and quantities you enter.

Use the same units for the package and recipe amounts. If you buy a 1 kg package and use 250 g, enter 1,000 g and 250 g here. The shared unit label also applies to your pantry quantity.

Unit price = package price ÷ package quantity
Planned use = quantity per batch × batches
Ingredient cost = unit price × planned use
Total servings = servings per batch × batches
Cost per serving = total ingredient cost ÷ total servings

Ingredient value includes the food you use from your pantry. New shopping spending counts only the packages you still need to buy. The two figures answer different questions.

Your entered prices drive every result. The starting values are illustrative, not current grocery-price data.

№03 · Full packages and leftovers

What you would spend at the shop

The plan uses available pantry stock first. Only the remaining quantity determines how many new packages to buy. If your stock covers the planned use, new spending is zero for that ingredient.

New packages round upward to a whole count. A small increase in planned use can require another package, which is why shopping cost does not always rise smoothly as batch count increases.

All quantities of one product share its entered package unit price. This values pantry stock consistently for the comparison; it does not track historical purchase costs, discounts or waste.

Still needed = max(planned use − starting stock, 0)
New packages = still needed ÷ package quantity, rounded up
New spending = new packages × package price
Leftover quantity = starting stock + new purchases − planned use
Stock value + new spending = ingredient value used + leftover value

For several batches, the recipe quantities multiply but your pantry does not. The comparison table recalculates every alternative from the same starting stock.

The example below uses the worksheet’s starting values. Treat them as arithmetic examples, not a complete recipe or a price recommendation.

The ingredients used cost $2.30. Dividing by 8 servings gives $0.29 per serving when rounded for display. Buying one of each package costs $10.80, with $8.50 allocated to ingredients left over.

Two batches with flour already in the pantry

With 600 g flour on hand and two batches needing 250 g each, no new flour package is required. The worksheet below calculates the stock value, amount used and remainder at the example package price.

Keep full precision until the total is calculated. Three distinct ingredient rows that each cost exactly one-third of a currency unit total 1.00, even though each row displays 0.33.

How the arithmetic is checked

Calculation method and attribution

Every calculated result comes from the entered prices and quantities. Prices and quantities stay as exact fractions while the worksheet adds them up, and money is rounded once, for display only. Three rows that each cost a third of a currency unit add up to a whole unit rather than landing a cent short.

The worked examples use the same calculation module as the interactive worksheet. Change a price or quantity to see the totals recalculate.

№06 · Reading your result

A few details that change the total

Ingredients used in more than one recipe step

Add all uses of the same purchased product together before entering its row. Separate rows are treated as separate purchases. Different products or package prices should remain separate.

Pack quantity and usable quantity

Use consistent quantities for what you buy and use. For food with trimming or draining losses, this worksheet does not estimate usable yield. Enter quantities you have measured or can justify from the package.

Costs beyond the ingredients

The results cover the package prices you enter. Labor, cooking fuel, delivery and other overhead are not added automatically. Cost per serving is not a suggested selling price or a profit estimate.

Currency labels and unit labels

Both are labels for your entries. Changing a label doesn’t convert an amount. Package quantities, recipe quantities and pantry stock must already use the same unit.

How the batch comparison uses pantry stock

Each row of the comparison starts fresh with the pantry quantities you entered. Stock is used once within that plan. The two-batch option is not added after the one-batch option, and the table does not track stock between cooking sessions.
